THE MEC of Health, Maruping Lekwene has indicated that significant strides had been made to improve healthcare services in Postmasburg with the assistance of the Kolomela Mine and Sishen Iron Ore Company who have respectively donated equipment valued at R2.7 million to the Postmasburg Hospital and also spent a further R13. 5 million towards the renovation of the theatre of the facility.

Lekwene conducted an oversight visit to the hospital on August 3, 2022 to monitor service delivery at the facility.

Departmental spokesperson, Lebogang Majaha said the donation has made it possible for the department to provide quality health care to residents in the area.

Majaha said the various issues and challenges were noted by Lekwene during the visit to the hospital.

The state of cleanliness, staffing, medication stock levels, availability of medical equipment and physical state of facilities was monitored and inspected during the visit by MEC Lekwene.

With regards to staffing, the hospital currently operates with a nursing staff complement of 29. Last week, the department processed the appointment of three additional nurses to beef-up the current capacity.

The theatre is currently undergoing renovation to the value of R13.5 million which is sponsored by Kolomela Mine, and equipment worth R 2.7 million was sponsored by Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT).

The department also received a report that Kolomela mine donated a mobile X-Ray machine and a Picture Archiving and Communications (PAC) System valued at R1.2 million to the facility.

The local municipality, Tsantsabane Municipality, and Kolomela mine has also ensured that adequate mattresses and blankets are available for usage.

“The equipment and upgraded facility will ensure that we deliver quality health care to the residents in the area,” said Majaha.

He said challenging resources will be addressed.

“The hospital has a bulk oxygen supply tank installed and will be connected directly to the rest of the facility at the end of this current financial year. Significant work has been done to improve healthcare services, including the newly refurbished maternity ward and reception area of Postmasburg hospital. There shall be focus placed on the emergency care unit in order to finalise much needed upgrades to fit the growing demand of the Tsantsabane local municipality,” he said.
