THE MULTI-disciplinary team executing Operation Vala Umgodi in the Namakwa District arrested a 21-year-old Lesotho national for the possession of uncut diamonds in Kleinzee on June 18.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the team was conducting routine inspections at a vehicle checkpoint near Kleinzee when they stopped and searched the suspect.
“The suspect was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for the uncut diamonds that were found in his possession. He could also not provide the immigration officials with documentation of being legally in the country,” said Sam.
He added that the suspect was subsequently arrested and was expected to appear in court soon.
“Operation Vala Umgodi will strengthen its efforts to eradicate illicit mining and the proliferation of undocumented persons in the Northern Cape,” Sam said.
