A NORTHERN Cape woman who brutally assaulted her ex-boyfriend in Loxton after he broke up with her will spend six years behind bars.

The provincial police have welcomed the six-year prison sentence that was recently handed down to 34-year-old Petronella Vink.

According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock, the incident took place on November 18, 2023, at approximately 10.50pm, when Vink stabbed and beat her 48-year-old ex-boyfriend with a hammer after he ended their relationship.

Vink was promptly arrested and chose to abandon her bail, remaining in custody until her sentencing.

The De Aar Circuit Regional Court found her guilty of assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm (GBH) and sentenced her to six years direct imprisonment. In addition to the prison term, she was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“Detective Constable Leevirne Raaf from the Carnarvon SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit led the meticulous investigation that ensured that no impunity was granted to the perpetrator of this heinous offence,” said Kock.
