The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, led a vibrant celebration of “Casual Day” at Boitumelo Special School for children with special needs in Phuthanang, Galeshewe.
THE PROVINCIAL commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, led a vibrant celebration of “Casual Day” at Boitumelo Special School for children with special needs in Phuthanang, Galeshewe, on Friday.
She was joined by SAPS provincial management, including Major-General Thabo Mphuthi, Major-General Jacques Raymond, Frances Baard district commissioner Major-General Charlotte Makgari and senior managers, as well as representatives from the CRC church, Metropolitan, and McDonald’s.
The event, which also saw participation from residents of the Yonder Centre, was themed “I See You” and was organised as a sports day.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam highlighted that the occasion recognised and celebrated the achievements of individuals with disabilities, with significant support from Metropolitan, McDonald’s and the CRC church.
During the festivities, the stakeholders encouraged the children to exhibit bravery and resilience, drawing inspiration from the biblical figure David.
Teams from Boitumelo and Yonder competed in various sports activities and were awarded medals, sponsored by Metropolitan, for their efforts.
In her address, Lieutenant-General Otola emphasised the importance of acknowledging every person’s inherent worth, dignity and uniqueness. She urged attendees to recognise not just the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, but also their potential and value.
The event aimed to raise awareness and support for persons with disabilities, fostering community engagement and promoting inclusivity.
Lieutenant-General Otola expressed her gratitude to all sponsors and SAPS components who contributed to the success of the day, ensuring that each child received a school jersey and a McDonald’s Happy Meal.
The SAPS Provincial Band provided entertainment, adding to the day’s festive atmosphere.
