A frustrated city resident says he is absolutely fed up with the regular water interruptions in Kimberley.

Dear Sir,

Thursday saw Kimberley residents high and dry AGAIN! But waking up to dry taps in Kimberley has become more the rule than the exception in recent times.

Though we appreciate the timely updates and celebrate when water is restored, the sound of the alarm bells is deafening for anyone and everyone with a bit of common sense.

We seem to be at the mercy of chance and whim, never knowing when we will wake up to dry taps, and knowing that there will probably never be a time that Kimberley residents will not be forced to hoard and store emergency stocks of water.

More and more residents are investing in water storage tanks, although not everyone can afford them.

But my concern goes a bit deeper than the mere inconvenience.

I have noticed a number of new developments springing up all around the city, which is good news, don’t get me wrong. But the alarming thing is that all these new businesses and residences are going to be dependent on the selfsame inadequate water supply that keeps running dry!

Would it not have been better to first invest in upgrading the water storage capacity at the reservoir first? And let’s not forget the sewage works that is going to be under additional strain.

The alarming thing is that sadly, there is absolutely NO, NONE, ZERO guarantee that the city will have water over the Festive Season. Residents are constantly told to use water sparingly and to conserve water … or else there may be problems.

It’s like we are being held to ransom! But is it really the residents that have caused this problem?

I am no engineer, but I have a funny feeling that if the capacity of the reservoir is not increased, and the current infrastructure is not meticulously monitored and maintained, 2025, 2026 and onwards are going to be dotted with dry spells. So I suppose we have to hold onto our water supplies.

And the residents of this once sparkling city are sick of it!
