Sol Plaatje Municipality Addresses Recent Continuation of Nightly Water Interruptions

Editorial Staff

KIMBERLEY – Residents of Sol Plaatje Municipality have been facing nightly water interruptions between 21:00 PM and 04:00 AM, and the local government is stepping in to address the issue. The interruptions are a result of low water levels at the Newton Reservoir caused by both aged infrastructure at the Riverton Water Treatment Plant and water leaks in the bulk pipeline.

Efforts have been made to fix the major leaks, but unfortunately, they have continued to resurface. Compounded by the current heatwave in the city, maintaining safe water levels has been increasingly challenging for the municipality.

Constant monitoring of reservoir levels has revealed that water reaching the Newton Reservoir is inadequate for safe pumping levels. Desired operating levels for the reservoir tanks are starkly contrasted to the current levels. To combat this issue and prevent a total shutdown, the municipality has implemented nightly water interruptions to conserve water and gradually restore reservoir levels.

The Sol Plaatje Municipality is currently implementing a five-year bulk infrastructure program, known as the Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI). The first phase, already in progress, focuses on refurbishing the Riverton plant to increase treated water capacity and improve water quality. Key areas of work include sand filter refurbishment, chemical treatment of water, and repairing the 25 identified water leaks on the main bulk pipelines using innovative technology like the “Smart-Ball.” Valve replacements are also part of the plan.

The procurement of contractors for these essential projects is currently at the bid evaluation stage, with a closing date of 26 October 2023. The appointments will be made in mid-November, and work is expected to commence in early December 2023.

The Riverton Water Treatment Plant, designed for treating at least 162 Mega litres per day (Mi/d) with a storage capacity of 18 Mega litres (MI), is currently operating at 70% capacity, treating only 113Ml/d. However, completion of the BFI project will lead to a more reliable water supply and improved levels overall.

The Sol Plaatje Municipality requests the patience and understanding of residents during this critical period. Efforts are being made to rectify the water interruptions and ensure a sustainable water supply for all.
