Residents clean up after municipality allegedly dumps at city park

Michael Hawthorne

New Park residents clean up their own park in Doherty Crescent in Kimberley on Saturday morning.

This comes after an initiative by Andre Vermeulen and other members of the Just do it yourself SPM community Facebook group.

Which aims to get the community off the couch, stop moaning and to bring the sparkle back to the city themselves.

Community welcomes initiative

Lorraine de Haast, a community member whose mother lived in the area for almost 20 years, says: “It is heartbreaking to have seen how the area deteriorated in the last 4 years. Thank you for making the effort to clean up someone else’s mess.”

“Now we are doing it for ourselves,” says Golebilemang Mogorosi.

Yvette Rodighiero says: “Well done you guys!”

Municipal workers caught dumping again

Members of the community say Sol Plaatje Municipality is not only guilty of not maintaining the park, but they are also allegedly responsible for dumping.

After one resident allegedly caught municipal workers of the Parks and Gardens section in the act of dumping waste at the park.

Photographic evidence taken by a community member shows two culprits in a municipal bakkie marked 143.
