Six suspects arrested for defrauding Sol Plaatje Municipality out of R1.6m in “ghost workers” scam

Six suspects between the age of 33 and 51 in Kuruman and Kimberley respectively have been arrested by the Hawks in today morning on charges of corruption and defrauding the Sol Plaatje Municipality out of R1.6m.

A spokesperson for the Hawks Nomthansazo Mnisi says it is alleged that between the years 2011 and 2016, there were ghost workers created into Sol Plaatje Municipality database. Various bank accounts were used to deposit money from the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s bank account amounting to approximately R1.6million.

All suspects are detained at Kimberley police cells and they are expected to make their first appearance at Kimberley Magistrate court on Thursday, 25 March 2021.

More arrests are imminent.
