HERMANUS – A pet and house sitters couple from the Western Cape is getting infamous on social media after a CCTV video shows one of the pet sitting partners grabbing a scared Hermanus pet named Hector, a boxer puppy of only 7 months, by the neck and throwing it outside has gone viral.
According to Alexis Mckenzie, a concerned citizen, Hector’s owner Mel Colton from Hermanus uploaded the video to a local community group on Facebook to warn others after Colton discovered the CCTV footage of how they were treating Hector.
Mckenzie says: “I feel it incredibly important that this video be shared far and wide! This is a couple in Hermanus who are “well-known house sitters”. The video of them abusing this dog is absolutely horrifying and I hope they land up paying the price for this cruelty. The dog in the video belongs to a woman named Mel Colton from Hermanus and she has shared the video on the Hermanus community group but the group is private so I’m sharing it publicly here.”
Investigation by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA
Dear Michael
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is currently investigating allegations of animal cruelty involving two pet sitters from Hermanus. The case has been handed over to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for further investigation by the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA). The following CCTV footage of the abuse was widely circulated on social media. In the footage, a puppy is seen to be beaten with an object and then cruelly picked up by the flesh of the neck and rump and thrown out of the door. The incident was reported to have taken place on 22 March 2021 in Hermanus. The owner of the puppy only became aware of the incident when the CCTV footage was watched afterwards. The owner is very distraught and wants justice.
We wish to assure our supporters that the case is in good hands. Our Inspectorate team has been in contact with the owner of the abused dog. We will be working closely with the owner to ensure that charges of animal cruelty are brought against the two pet sitters in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.Kind Regards
Belinda Abraham, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA
