Three arrested with R500 000 worth of rhino horn

On Tuesday, 27 April 2021 Hawks member from Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation and Hluhluwe Rhino Anti Pouching Team arrested three suspects aged between 27 and 33 for possession of rhino horn at Bhambanana area in Ngwavuma.

Capt Simphiwe Mhlongo, a Hawks’ spokesperson, says the police received information about suspects who were selling rhino horn in the area. “A joint operation was conducted and members spotted the said vehicle. They stopped the vehicle and a search was conducted, upon searching, a rhino horn valued at approximately R500 000.00 was found.”

“Suspects were placed under arrest and charged for possession of the presumably stolen property. They are expected to appear in the Ingwavuma Magistrate’s Court today,” Mhlongo concludes.
