A Tale of Ranks and Rights: Major General Mochologi and Ian Cameron

Editorial Staff

In a story that has recently captured the attention of South Africans, Major General Mochologi, the district commander of the Overberg District in the Western Cape, has opened a case of crimen injuria against Ian Cameron of Action SA. The case comes after a video shared by Cameron on TikTok last week, in which he exposed the fact that in 2011, Mochologi was appointed as a brigadier in the SAPS with only a national diploma in public relations and no police training or experience.

Since then, Mochologi has been promoted from brigadier to major general and was recently the visible policing commander of the entire Free State province. Cameron’s video suggested that this appointment was a slap in the face to competent officers with decades of experience and that it destroys morale and places South Africans at risk of becoming violent crime victims.

In response to the video, Mochologi has opened a case against Cameron with the South African Police Service. This case has sparked debate over whether or not Cameron’s video constituted a crime.

Many are arguing that the video was merely exercising Cameron’s right to freedom of speech. Furthermore, it is not uncommon for people to express their opinions about public figures, and the video was simply highlighting the facts, he says.

The case of Major General Mochologi and Ian Cameron is ongoing, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. In the meantime, Cameron has expressed his admiration for the brave men and women in blue who work hard every day to fight crime and keep South Africans safe, regardless of the internal challenges of the SAPS.
