JOHANNESBURG – A Video of an altercation between two members of the South African Police Service Tactical Response Team (TRT) and two citizens at a Pick ’n Pay Shopping Centre somewhere in Gauteng has gone viral and has already been watched 763 000 times and received over 4900 comments.

The video was initially posted on TikTok with the title “SAPS dink hul kan doen en sê wat hul wil” and was then reshared to Facebook by Franklin Meyer on the 7th of February.

From the comments on Facebook, it is clear to see that the South African public has strong opinions on the video. There is a mixture of support and criticism for the SAPS, with some South Africans feeling like they are still living under white supremacy while others blame the ruling African National Congress (ANC) for this “nonsense”.

There is also an overwhelming amount of criticism for the cameraman, with some South Africans feeling that he was unnecessarily provoking the situation. This highlights the tension between the police and citizens, especially in a country with a long history of racial tension.
