Today, Monday 27 February 2023, a dedicated Ehlanzeni District Intelligence Task Team in Nelspruit, South Africa, made a significant breakthrough in the fight against human trafficking. Acting on information gathered and followed up on, the team found 19 Bangladesh nationals in a three-bedroomed house in Kamagugu outside Nelspruit.

The team further found that the cell phones of the 19 Bangladesh males were placed in one plastic bag, suggesting that they had no access to communicate with either their relatives or friends. As a result, a 52-year-old Bangladesh national, who served as the housekeeper, was arrested for human trafficking and is due to appear in Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court soon. The 19 individuals will be charged for contravention of the Immigration Act.

Our investigation continues to probe their destination and the kingpins, however, preliminary investigation suggests that some of the Bangladesh nationals were en route to Middleburg while others were destined for Johannesburg.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has praised the excellent work done by the team in rescuing the 19 Bangladesh nationals from human traffickers.
