[PICS] 22 Injured in Massive Multi-Vehicle Collision

On Monday morning, just after 07:40, Netcare 911 responded to a major collision involving a truck, taxi and at least thirty other vehicles on the M41 East Bound in Umhlanga Ridge, Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The truck driver allegedly lost control, ploughing through morning traffic in an accident which left 22 people injured.

The extent of the injuries ranged from severe to minor and many of the victims had already been transported privately to a hospital prior to the arrival of emergency services. Netcare 911, Emer-G-Med paramedics, SAPS, Durban Metropolitan SAR, and Ethekwini Fire and Rescue rushed to the scene to provide assistance and care.

A Netcare 911 helicopter ambulance was called to the scene to airlift some of the injured to the hospital. The scene was still active and an update was pending as of Monday morning.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation and it is not yet known if any charges will be laid. It reminds all drivers to take care of South Africa’s roads, especially when travelling in congested areas.

Driving responsibly and being aware of the dangers of the roads can help to reduce the number of serious accidents that occur. Regardless of the cause, the accident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety.
