Recent speculation suggests that leading social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter may be fraudulently manipulating paid advertisements. Veteran social media users have reported suspicious behaviour with regard to promoted posts on both platforms.
Users report that when scrolling down the feed, they had issues where scrolling ‘clicked’ on a post. On Twitter, the post ‘accidentally clicked’ would almost always be a promoted post. On Facebook, while the frequency of these ‘accidental clicks’ being promoted posts was less, it was still noticeable because of an increased frequency. Interestingly, users experienced the same issue on different phones, older Android and newer devices with the latest updates.
This has left many wondering if these ‘accidental post clicks’ are a bug or a feature. The comparison was made to a banker who was caught stealing 2c from every client’s account, a crime that went unnoticed until it was eventually discovered. Similarly, it is possible that social media platforms are manipulating activity on promoted ads to artificially generate ‘interest’.
Unfortunately, there is no hard proof of this theory, though it does make for an interesting conspiracy. Neither Facebook nor Twitter could be reached for comment because there is no direct channel for rapid communication. We are at an age where Twitter now automatically replies to press emails with a poop emoji, seriously.
Have you had similar experiences where you felt like social media platforms forced content on you? If so, it could be an indicator of a much bigger problem. Only time will tell if this conspiracy proves to be true.
