Gqeberha Kidnapping Suspect Appears in Court After Victim Returns Home

On 16 March 2023, a 30-year-old kidnapping victim was allegedly abducted outside her workplace in Newton Park, Gqeberha. The victim was accosted by three armed suspects who shoved her into a white Toyota Corolla and drove away.

The South African Police Service quickly responded to the kidnapping report and spotted the vehicle on Old Grahamstown Road in Gqeberha. A chase ensued and Xolisile Rawutini (39) was found in the car and was immediately arrested. The other suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran into nearby bushes. A 9mm Norinco firearm was recovered in the nearby bushes.

A further search at Rawutini’s residence in Motherwell Gqeberha uncovered another firearm with a filed serial number. The kidnapping victim was thankfully reunited with her family.

On 20 and 24 March 2023, Rawutini appeared in the Gqeberha New Law Magistrate’s court. The matter was remanded to 5 April 2023 for a formal bail application.

The South African Police Service responded quickly to the kidnapping report and was able to apprehend the suspect and return the victim home safely. This case serves as a reminder of the efforts of the law enforcement agencies in South Africa to ensure the safety of its citizens and bring justice to those who commit serious crimes.
