Unsatisfactory Refuse Collection in Kimberley Sparks Outrage

Editorial Staff

Residents of Kimberley were left frustrated and angry today, with the Sol Plaatje Municipality waste team not collecting their refuse in some neighbourhoods or streets. Reports of strange pickup patterns, such as collecting in one street in the morning and only collecting the adjacent streets in the afternoon, have raised questions about the inefficiencies in the city’s waste management.

Henning Van Heerden asked in a post on Kimberley se Lekkerste Blad, “If refuse was not collected, can we deduct one week’s payment from our Sol Plaatje Municipal account?” Frederick Nelson Greeff noted that “Caters Glen’s waste has been uncollected since last week. The streets look terrible.” Janine Conradie said, “They stole our bags last night after it was said the truck was on its way, but this morning it’s been strewn all over the veld on the other side of the road.” Calvin Brekelmans reported, “They only collected half of our street. The rest was dumped in a big pile on my driveway on Monday. Nothing has happened since then.”

Joey Van Aswegen too has been facing the same challenge. Who had already called Sol Plaatje five times to lodge complaints and even spoke to the refuse removal supervisor who promised to get things done, but to no avail.

The current situation is unacceptable, and it is time for the Sol Plaatje Municipality to take the necessary steps to rectify the situation. It is incumbent upon them to ensure that their services are efficient, timely, and equitable. It is the right of the citizens to be served with the utmost respect and dignity.
