Yesterday, a Parliamentary oversight inspection/visit of the Sol Plaatje Municipality was concluded in Kimberley. Executive Mayor-Councillor Kagisho Sonyoni posted a picture on the Mayor’s Official Facebook account and said: “Wrapped up today’s session of the Parliamentary Oversight at Sol Plaatje Municipality.”
The purpose of the oversight inspection is to assess the performance and operations of the municipality and ensure that it is acting in the public interest and providing the services that it is mandated to do. However, some Kimberley residents have expressed their doubts about the visit and the effectiveness of Parliamentary oversight.
In response to the post, Kimberley resident Teddy Brown said: “ANC comrades pretending that they are doing oversight of ANC comrades and pleased with the sight of 29 years of mismanagement, waste, corruption and total decay of Sol Plaatje municipality.” Other residents such as Michael Kidson and Gertjie Taylor commented “You couldn’t wrap up a Christmas present” and “Just another bla bla session. No positives coming from it.”
The residents highlighted the problems of a mismanaged and dysfunctional municipality and expressed their wariness that if the Parliamentary oversight did not uncover any issues, then the oversight was just as corrupt and dysfunctional as some of the municipalities they are inspecting.
The Parliamentary oversight inspection/visit of the Sol Plaatje Municipality concluded yesterday, with the results of the inspection yet to be seen. Kimberley residents have made their thoughts clear and will be watching to see if the Parliamentary oversight can bring about change for the better in the municipality.

Yet another failed municipality run by the ANC. Kimberley was once a beautiful city, clean, pothole free and a destination for tourists.
Today it has nothing for tourists to see other than water leaks, filth on the pavements holes in the roads. Kimberley is a health hazard for every citizen who lives there. Is this Ramaphosa’s “New Dawn”?
Then to top it all the very thing that many tourists come to Kimberley for is to see the flamingo’s, now the Kamfers Dam is a cesspool of diseases which has reached beyond the railway line and is now in the pristine veldt of the Dronefield Nature Reserve.
The members of the Municipality should be taken to task, charged with dereliction of duties and have a personal audit done to recoup as much funds returned to the coffers.
