In recent months, Pick ’N Pay, one of South Africa’s leading retail chains, has been facing increasing criticism for misleading pricing, dodgy advertising and a general lack of customer service.
Customers have been reporting a variety of issues, from incorrect pricing to bulk items being sold at the inflated single-item price.
Athur J experienced this firsthand when he visited a Pick ’N Pay at the BUZZ Shopping Center on Saturday 08 April 2023. From the height he was looking from, he noticed Speckled Eggs priced at R 18.99, but when the cashier scanned it, a price of R 109.00 appeared. When Arthur queried this, the manager’s attitude was aggressive and rude. This incident raises questions about Pick ’N Pay’s Double the Difference Policy, and whether customers are actually comparing barcodes before purchase.
Refiloe also encountered “false advertising” and rude staff when she visited a Pick ’N Pay at Trade route mall Lenasia. She had gone to buy a pack of Pampers premium care, which was advertised to be on special/promotion, only to be charged R300 instead of the R199 advertised. When Refiloe returned to the store to request they correct the mistake, she was given the runaround and eventually refused a refund.
Lavinia M also criticised Pick ’N Pay for false advertising, saying in a review that each time there are specials, she goes to the store only to find nothing. They claim the owner and managers are withholding or not ordering stock that is on special, and suggest that once the special has ended it is placed on the sales floor.
The issues caused by the lack of system administrators and price checking puts a serious burden on their cashier staff who must at the end of the day receive the customers’ frustrations caused by the poor maintenance and housekeeping on making sure pricing is correct and that items are scannable.
To ensure good customer service and improve trust, Pick ’N Pay needs to make sure their pricing is correct and that items are scannable. Until then, it’s a thumbs down for Pick ’N Pay.
