The cost of verifying an organization on Twitter in South Africa is quite steep. According to Twitter, the cost to verify an organization is R18100.00 per month (plus applicable taxes). And each additional affiliated account is an additional R910.00 per month (plus applicable taxes). This cost is exorbitant when compared to the average income in South Africa. It is also worth noting that social or community organizations are excluded from the Twitter Verified Organizations subscription.
Twitter Verified Organizations enables businesses, non-profits, and government institutions to sign up and manage their verification and to affiliate and verify any related account. It is denoted by a gold checkmark and square avatar for businesses and non-profits, or a grey checkmark and circular avatar for governmental or multilateral organizations. Organizations can choose to affiliate any individuals or entities associated with them, and any vetted and approved government organization and government individual accounts can receive a grey checkmark and affiliate badge if they sign up for Verified Organizations.
In addition, the subscription provides access to the Twitter Verified Organizations Portal which allows organizations to add and remove affiliated accounts and provides immediate verification status to anyone in their network who accepts their invitation to affiliate. It also provides an affiliation badge, a small image of their parent company’s profile picture, displayed next to their checkmark. This badge takes a user directly to the affiliated organization, making it a great driver of followers.
With a Verified Organizations subscription, organizations can access Premium Support to quickly escalate critical issues, elevated Tweet, DM, and media upload limits, and access to Twitter Blue with features like Edit Tweet, Bookmark Folders, Longer Tweets, Prioritized rankings in conversations, and Half ads.
While these features are great, the cost is far too high for most organizations in South Africa. The average income in South Africa is significantly lower than the subscription fee and it is unfeasible for many organizations to even consider signing up for the service. The cost of verification is too high and it is not accessible enough for many social or community organizations.
