Sol Plaatje Municipality Unveils Future Water Security Plans Amidst Emergency Shutdown Fallout

Editorial Staff

KIMBERLEY – In the aftermath of the unexpected Emergency Water Shutdown that caught residents off guard, the Sol Plaatje Municipality is now redirecting its focus toward future efforts and water security initiatives. While the recent emergency shutdown has left residents in shock, speculations have arisen about its abruptness and potential ties to the ongoing battle to maintain dam levels at Newton Reservoir.

The emergency shutdown was necessitated by major leaks discovered on the Sunset Manor and Midlands pipelines, both dating back to the 1940s. In response, the Municipality has mobilized additional resources, engaging network and bulk water supply specialists to address the ageing infrastructure’s challenges.

Efforts are underway to drain the affected areas and rectify the leaks promptly. The Municipality is committed to restoring the water supply by Saturday, 25 November 2023, with tankering relief efforts deployed to all wards immediately.

Looking ahead, significant strides are being made in water infrastructure development, with over R104 million allocated for 2024 through the Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI) grant. This funding is earmarked for fixing the pipeline and addressing related shortcomings, reflecting a proactive approach to future-proofing the water supply system.

Despite the short notice and resulting inconvenience, the Municipality extends sincere apologies to residents and businesses. The abruptness of the emergency shutdown is attributed to a collective effort aimed at ensuring water security for the community.

Acting in the best interest of residents, the Sol Plaatje Municipality emphasizes its commitment to maintaining a high standard of water quality. The municipality currently boasts an impressive 98% Blue Drop Status, a noteworthy achievement in the ongoing mission to guarantee a reliable and top-quality water supply.

As residents navigate the challenges posed by the emergency shutdown, the Municipality seeks understanding and cooperation, assuring that every action taken is with the long-term goal of securing the water future of Sol Plaatje Municipality.
