Evening Shutdown in Battle for Newton Reservoir Recovery

Editorial Staff

In a bid to replenish the dwindling dam levels at Newton Reservoir, the Sol Plaatje Municipality announces an early start to nightly water interruptions at 18:00 for tonight only. Despite ongoing efforts, parts of Kimberley continue to grapple with a severe water shortage since the emergency shutdown on November 21. The latest update from SPM signals a challenging situation as they work to stabilize the reservoirs.

The Sol Plaatje Municipality acknowledges the critical need to bolster water levels at Newton Reservoir. Two of the reservoirs have achieved sufficient levels for pumping to Kimberley CBD and surrounding areas. However, additional efforts are underway to ensure an ample supply for tomorrow morning’s demand. High temperatures and heightened demand from the Emergency Shutdown necessitate strategic water storage.

To address this, an earlier start to nightly interruptions at 18:00 is implemented to aid reservoir recovery. The municipality commits to operating two fully functional pumps and continues to tanker water to specific areas. Residents requiring relief supplies can contact designated officials and coordinators, as listed in the official statement.
