KIMBERLEY – In a significant move to address longstanding water challenges in Kimberley, Ekapa Mining, one of the city’s major private employers, has extended a helping hand to Sol Plaatje Municipality. The diamond mining company is reinforcing its commitment to a public-private partnership by focusing on the optimization of the old and new Riverton Waterworks Plants.
A media statement released today announced that Ekapa Mining’s top engineers, specializing in water treatment plant management, have conducted a thorough assessment of the Riverton Waterworks Plants. The goal is to develop an action plan based on the forthcoming report, outlining strategies to enhance water production and address the challenges within the water supply network.
“We are here to share our experience, and our knowledge, and to provide the best advice on how Sol Plaatje Municipality can swiftly and economically address the shortfalls in the treatment works,” stated Mr. Jahn Hohne, CEO of Ekapa Mining.
The assessment revealed that while the Riverton Treatment Works is operating at high capacity, certain components require maintenance. Ekapa Mining emphasized that with the right contractor, budget, and plan, these issues can be addressed effectively.
Mr. Thapelo Matlala, Municipal Manager of Sol Plaatje Municipality, expressed optimism about the collaboration: “We are serious about addressing the water challenges that have been plaguing Kimberley over many years. Approaching Ekapa is the start of utilizing the expertise within our city, and we believe their experience and advice can improve the supply of quality water to Kimberley residents.”
As part of the collaboration, Ekapa Mining has committed to providing high-tech equipment and technologies to eliminate flaws hindering maximum production. The Municipality aims to ensure high-level maintenance at Riverton in early 2024, with a focus on retaining and surpassing the previous Blue Drop Status.
The Riverton Water Purification site has recently undergone desludging and filter media replacement operations. To mitigate turbidity levels, pre-chlorination water treatment is being employed. The Municipality has also appointed a leading chemical engineering company to implement a three-month plan for producing quality water from the Riverton plants.
“We are confident that we will, in the nearest future, report on our achievements in guaranteeing water security and meeting all provisions of the National Water Act,” said the Municipality’s Communications Department.
