The Sol Plaatje Municipality issued a media statement today, addressing the ongoing water supply issues in Kimberley. The statement detailed the reintroduction of the Daytime Water Supply Interruption from Saturday, 17th February 2024, between 12:00 and 17:00, while the Nightly Water Supply Interruption continues from 21:00 to 05:00.
The municipality highlighted a series of refurbishment and maintenance work currently underway at the Riverton Water Treatment Plants. Despite having the capacity to treat 162 megaliters per day, the plant’s production has been limited to less than 100 megaliters due to inadequate maintenance. The shortfall of 20 megaliters is further aggravated by leaks in the pipes, with the Newton Reservoirs currently at critically low levels.
The Newton Reservoirs, comprising 102, 91, 45, and 23 megaliters, are well below their desired levels, as indicated in the statement. The municipality is urgently addressing the situation, with a comprehensive plan to improve water production and address the leaks.
A detailed scope of work was outlined, including chemical dosing and coagulation automation, clarifier cleaning, filtration repairs, and a 10-month plan to fix water leaks in the main supply pipelines. A contractor is set to commence work on 21st February 2024 to automate chemical dosing, while repairs of clarifiers and filters are expected to be completed by 19th February and 8th March 2024, respectively.
The municipality urged residents to conserve water during this challenging period, emphasizing the need to reserve water for critical use only. The community is called upon to refrain from watering gardens to ensure that the water pumped into the reservoirs generates sufficient pressure to supply all areas in Kimberley.
The statement also provided a snapshot of Kimberley’s Peak Summer Water Demand, highlighting a significant shortfall in purified water production. Residents experiencing water interruptions outside the stipulated times were encouraged to contact the Call Centre on 053 8306 1111 Toll-Free 080 1229 010 for assistance.
