Motorcyclist Hospitalised After Hitting Speedbump in Kimberley

Editorial Staff

A motorcyclist was rushed to Gariep Hospital early on Thursday morning after hitting a speedbump on the N8 on Oliver Road in Kimberley.

According to a Kimberley resident, the accident occurred around midnight on 24 April 2024, with SAPS being notified at 00:03.

“I have heard all sorts of vehicles, trucks with heavy loads included who have hit that speedbump hard late at night and early hours of the morning.”

Another community member reported that the motorcyclist’s helmet came off during the accident, resulting in various injuries. These injuries allegedly included broken ribs, fingers, and tar burns, some of which were sustained on the face.

Unmarked Speedbumps Condemned by Community

Speculation by some community members that the speedbump was unmarked was dispelled by Sol Plaatje Councillor Ockert Fourie who shared photographs showing that the speedbump in question is marked.

Low Light Area

Concerns have been raised about non-functioning street lights on sections of the roads leading to the traffic circle at the Honoured Dead Memorial. This creates a dangerous situation for both pedestrians and motorists due to the poor visibility in the area.

Police Investigation

According to Lt Col Sergio Kock the Kimberley SAPS are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving following the accident. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Kimberley detectives on 082 495 4646.
