Government responds to vandalism of infrastructure at Bothas Hill Reservoir

GRAHAMSTOWN – The Department of Water and Sanitation together with Makana Local Municipality will open a case of damage to state property today following a break in at Botha’s Hill reservoir this morning.

“Government to open a case of damage to state property”

Department of Water and Sanitation

Vandalism of infrastructure is totally unacceptable. Beyond it being an act of criminality, it renders service delivery impotent. It delays such service delivery and therefore interferes with the Constitutional rights of South Africans.

The criminals cut through a fence and damaged a telemetry system at Botha’s Hill reservoir that is used to monitor water levels. They also managed to pass through an electric fence and bypass the alarm system. However, this will not affect water supply at this stage to the areas that get water from Botha’s Hill reservoir.

The Department appeals to all communities to protect water infrastructure meant to provide water to them and to use water sparingly for the benefit of everyone.
