Due to pressure from 37 828 DearSA participants, the government has decided to exclude smartphones from the draft regulations. According to DearSA it’s a win indeed.
However, they say opponents of the proposed changes should not stop there as some of the devices that are still being considered include;
- Laptops;
- Tablets;
- IPTV;
- Internet;
- Decoders;
- Set-top boxes.
The SABC still require subscribers of on-demand streaming services like Netflix, Youtube, and Showmax to pay a special household levy (similar to a TV license) for owning electronic devices — other than smartphones.
DearSA say they will keep a close eye on the SABC proposal and will inform the public of further developments.
