Nine suspects arrested for defrauding Sol Plaatje Municipality out of R1.6m in “ghost workers” scam

KIMBERLEY – Three more suspects have been arrested by the Hawks this morning in the R1.6m ghost workers scam, bringing the total to nine suspects.

A spokesperson for the Hawks Nomthansazo Mnisi says it is alleged that between the years 2011 and 2016, there were ghost workers created into Sol Plaatje Municipality database. Various bank accounts were used to deposit money from the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s bank account amounting to approximately R1.6million.

All suspects are detained at Kimberley police cells and have made their first appearance at Kimberley Magistrate court today. The case is postponed to tomorrow for a formal bail application. All accused to remain in custody, Mnisi says.

More arrests are imminent.
