Newton Reservoir pumps shutdown due to critical levels

Michael Hawthorne

KIMBERELY – The water supply from the Newton Reservoir has been shutoff due to critically low levels at the dams.

Ockie Fourie, a DA Councillor of the Sol Plaatje Municipality, says: “I was at the Newton Reservoir and want to inform you of the latest developments. All pumps at the Reservoir are switched off. Dam levels are extremely low. The valve on the 600mm pipeline was apparently closed earlier this morning and once again this information was not shared with the Councillors, nor the Communities. I’m currently at a Memorial Service but will leave soon directly to the cause of the problem which was not detected from the air by means of an aeroplane and the use of a drone.“

“The pumps at Riverton Purification Plant are pumping at full capacity, however, there is only a very slight increase in the level of the 45ML storage dam. All other dams are closed and the supply to areas that are supplied from the Newton Reservoir have been terminated in order to increase the dam level.”

“I’m speaking on behalf of myself when I say that I can’t see water be restored before tomorrow.
Sorry for the bad news. I will keep you posted,” Fourie concludes.
