WATCH: Flooding of Orkney Vaal Leaves Over 80 Displaced and in Need of Support

Michael Hawthorne

ORKNEY – On 19 February 2023, the unthinkable happened. The Vaal River burst its banks after reaching full capacity due to heavy rainfall, leading to the Orkney Vaal Private Resort in the North-West Province of South Africa being flooded. The resort is home to a diverse community of people from the affluent to those in dire need, and the effects of the flooding were devastating.

Over two-thirds of the houses at the resort were damaged by the floodwaters, and the entire resort was ordered to evacuate. This left many with no other place to go, leaving them homeless and destitute. More than 80 people were immediately displaced and had to be placed in temporary shelters in the town of Orkney.

The situation for these people is dire, and they need help and support to rebuild their lives. Fortunately, there is an opportunity to help those affected by the flood. Pastor Petro Kotze of Voetlig Bediening is leading the relief effort and is appealing for donations of basic supplies such as bedding and blankets, pots and pans, cutlery, toiletries, cleaning basics, rubbish bags, clothes and shoes, non-perishable foods, coffee, tea and long life milk, fruits and vegetables and basic over the counter medication.

If you would like to help those affected by the flood in Orkney Vall, please contact Pastor Petro Kotze of Voetlig Bediening on 076 986 5919. Your help and support could make a real difference to those in need.
