Editorial Staff

Severe weather conditions caused chaos in Kimberley this evening, 21 March 2023, as lightning strikes peaked at 16 flashes per minute. Shoppers were seen running for their cars and taking shelter along the walkway, while pets ran for their lives from the roaring thunder. The South African Weather Service has issued an alert for Severe Thunderstorms, warning of possible damage to infrastructure and communication disruption.

Experts advise that if possible, people should stay indoors and away from metal objects during the storms while avoiding shelter under trees or tall objects. Fishing and golf should also be avoided, as both golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity. Any combination of hail, strong winds and heavy downpours can also accompany the storms, making them even more dangerous.

The rains may also cause flooding in areas of the city that are known to get flooded during heavy rainfalls. Residents are advised to take the necessary precautions to ensure they and their property remain safe during this storm.
