[UPDATE] Emergency Water Shutdown: Kimberley Residents Face Extended Disruption

Editorial Staff

NORTHERN CAPE – Kimberley residents are in the midst of a water crisis following the discovery of two major leaks. The leaks, located behind Sunset Manor and at Midlands, have prompted emergency measures by the Sol Plaatje Municipality.

Dewatering efforts began at 13:00 today at Sunset Manor, with repairs anticipated to be completed between 03:00 and 04:00. However, a significant delay is expected in flooding the system, pushing the water supply restoration timeline to Friday. Furthermore, concerns arise about the availability of sufficient water at Newton Reservoir, necessitating the transportation of water from Riverton.

The Diamond Field Advertiser (DFA) reports that Kimberley residents may endure water shortages until Saturday due to the emergency shutdown. Acting Mayor Thobeka Matika assured residents that water tankers would be deployed to all wards immediately, with a focus on those initially affected by the shutdown.

“We are embarking on an immediate course of action and aim to restore the water supply by Saturday,” stated Acting Mayor Matika.

To address this challenge, flatbed trucks equipped with JoJo tanks will roam the city, providing an alternative water supply. Regrettably, only one water tanker is available for the entire Kimberley area.
