KIMBERLEY – In the ongoing water crisis that has gripped Kimberley, Thabo Mothibi, the communication manager at the Sol Plaatje Municipality (SPM), provides a crucial update on the repair efforts for the two major leaks affecting the water supply in the city.
Repairs Update: Strides Made in Restoring Water Supply
Mothibi provided an update on the repair efforts at Sunset Manor and Midland in Roodepan, revealing significant progress in addressing the identified leaks affecting the city’s water supply.
Anticipating positive outcomes, Mothibi informed residents that water supply restoration is expected to commence at 08:00 tomorrow for some areas of Kimberley. The intensified pumping of water to the Newton Reservoirs will facilitate this early relief, with the remaining areas set to follow suit. Successful dewatering at Midlands has enabled crucial technical work including welding, while ongoing drainage efforts at Sunset Manor (non-return chamber) are progressing towards completing repairs by midnight.
Community Appeal: Clear Paths for Water Delivery Trucks
In light of the urgent need for water supply, an impassioned appeal was extended to communities. The SPM urged residents to allow unimpeded access for water delivery trucks. The current situation is causing disruptions as trucks face obstacles in certain localities. The municipality stresses the importance of not obstructing roads and emphasizes the critical role of smooth passage for all vehicles involved in delivering water, including those transporting water from Riverton to Kimberley.
Community Support Needed for Water Transportation
This plea for cooperation aligns with the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s earlier call for assistance from residents possessing trucks or bakkies. The collaborative effort seeks to ensure an immediate and sufficient water supply to all corners of the city. Residents capable of transporting water from Riverton to Kimberley are urged to contact Saul Maseng at Riverton Waterworks on 073 381 5218 to contribute to this vital initiative.
Support for Community Journalism: A Vital Link in Crisis Communication
As the community navigates these challenging times, staying informed is crucial. The Kimberley Prospector, a community-focused publication, continues to play a pivotal role in disseminating updates and information. The ongoing water crisis underscores the importance of supporting community journalism, as it remains a vital link between authorities and the public.
Residents are encouraged to become “Prospectors” by subscribing to support local journalism. This initiative ensures that the community receives accurate and timely information, fostering a sense of unity in overcoming challenges.
A Unified Call to Action
In a time where every action counts, Kimberley is faced with a dual challenge – securing its water supply and staying well-informed. The Sol Plaatje Municipality, alongside community-driven efforts and the dedication of The Kimberley Prospector, is calling on residents to unite, allowing water delivery and supporting community journalism as essential components in overcoming the city’s current predicament.
Together, as a community, Kimberley can weather this crisis, emerging stronger and more resilient.
