SPM Water Update on Emergency Repairs

Editorial Staff

KIMBERLEY – In a recent media statement, the Sol Plaatje Municipality expressed sincere apologies to Kimberley residents for the disruptions caused by the Emergency Water Shutdown. Despite the regrettable necessity of the shutdown due to significant water losses, the municipality acknowledges the hardship faced by residents and appeals for patience during the ongoing restoration efforts.

2 Major Leaks Repaired

Efforts to address the two major leaks, identified at the 900mm diameter Sunset Manor (Non-Return Valve) and the cross-section of the 900 and 600mm diameter chamber at the Midlands pipeline, have made considerable progress. These ageing components, installed in the 1940s, presented unforeseen challenges, yet the repair operations are on schedule.

The municipality enlisted the expertise of bulk water and network specialists, working collaboratively with engineers and technicians. Operations included dewatering, valve removals, non-return valve replacements, new installations, and welding, overcoming operational challenges posed by heavy rains.

Timeline of Water Restoration

Due to the strides made, water supply is expected to be reinstated in broader Galeshewe, Platfontein, and Roodepan by 18:00 (6 pm) today. The Kimberley CBD and surrounding residential areas are earmarked for restoration by 18:00 tomorrow. The municipality emphasizes that the scheduled pumping into the network is proceeding as planned.

Fixing these major leaks, although an unplanned endeavour, is a crucial step in addressing network vulnerabilities and ensuring a sustainable, high-quality water supply for the future.
