Kimberley Water Update: Riverton Production Drops as Sol Plaatje Municipality Further Extends Nightly Interruption Strategy

Editorial Staff

In an attempt to alleviate the ongoing water crisis, the Sol Plaatje Municipality has announced that the water supply will be restored between 16:00 and 19:00 today. However, this respite will predominantly benefit the suburbs around the Newton Reservoir, such as New Park and the CBD. Unfortunately, residents in other areas will not receive sustained water before facing further interruptions.

The Nightly Water Interruption is set to take effect earlier than usual, starting at 19:00 and continuing until 05:00, but only for tonight. This strategic measure aims to facilitate the replenishment of dams at the Newton Reservoirs, with the municipality expressing hope for significant improvements by tomorrow.

The need for such drastic water management steps is attributed to a drop in production at the Riverton Waterworks, which led to an earlier water outage, inconveniencing residents.

The challenges posed by the water scarcity issue have prompted numerous residents to share their experiences and concerns through The Kimberley Prospector’s Kimberley Water Supply Feedback Form. Over 79 reports have already been received, including 57 opinions expressing the dire situation faced by residents.

The most affected areas, as identified by community feedback, include Belgravia, Herlear, Hadison Park, Beaconsfield, and South Ridge. The severity of the problem is further underscored by the anticipated high temperatures reaching around 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days, adding additional pressure to the water supply.

As Kimberley faces yet another day of water challenges, the community remains resilient, but the urgent need for sustainable solutions is undeniable. The municipality’s efforts to manage the crisis are evident, yet the broader impact on various neighbourhoods persists. Residents brace themselves for the continuation of water interruptions until at least Wednesday, hoping for a comprehensive and lasting resolution to this pressing issue.
