KIMBERLEY – In a recent update from the Sol Plaatje Municipality on Thursday, November 30, 2023, it was confirmed that repair work on the major valve rupture near Club 2000 and Phutanang is underway. The rupture occurred in one of the valves on the 500mm takeoff from the 900mm diameter pipe, causing disruptions in the water supply to residential areas such as Phutanang, Ipeleng, Club 2000, and Phomolong.
The repair efforts focused on the flow meter flange adopter, are anticipated to conclude by 22:00 tonight. Despite the inconvenience caused, the municipality assures residents that the rupture has not impacted the main supply line to the Newton Reservoirs.
However, residents in areas supplied by the Newton Reservoir continue to be affected as residents live through an ongoing water crisis and extended daily and nightly interruptions without access to water.
Thabo Mothibi, the Communications Manager for Sol Plaatje Municipality, expressed regret for the ongoing inconvenience and urged residents to exercise patience as the repairs progress. Water tankers have been deployed to provide relief supplies to the affected areas.
The water crisis in Kimberley persists, and residents are urged to stay informed, engaged, and resilient as the municipality works to address the ongoing challenges.
Residents Take Action
Meanwhile, Kimberley residents have amplified their concerns, with complaints rising from 92 to 133 and continuing. Recognizing the severity of the situation, The Kimberley Prospector has attached the growing number of complaints to a formal submission to the South African Human Rights Commission.
