Water Woes Continue in Kimberley: Residents Left in the Dark as One Pump Cause Water Interruptions

Michael Hawthorne

Residents in Kimberley are facing ongoing water supply challenges, with reports indicating that only one of the two pumps at the Newton Reservoir is currently operational. Despite daily and nightly interruptions aimed at filling the reservoirs, many areas have experienced little to no water since November 23.

Complaints of unannounced water interruptions persist, leaving residents frustrated and without clear solutions. A ward councillor expressed concerns about the lack of communication when only one pump is in use, and the issue is set to be addressed at an executive level.

The Kimberley Prospector has raised several questions to the Sol Plaatje Municipality (SPM) regarding the water situation but has not received responses as of the time of publication.

Questions include inquiries about the reasons for running on one pump at Newton Reservoir, the unexplained daytime interruptions in affected areas, and any changes made at the reservoir during or after the major repairs.

Clarity is sought on the allocation of water from different dams to specific areas and whether there have been modifications to the dams’ outflow structures.

Residents are eager for information on the operational status of the previously empty 4th dam and whether any changes were made to any aspect of Newton Reservoir during or since the repairs.

The lack of clear communication and transparency from SPM has intensified the challenges faced by Kimberley residents, who continue to endure water scarcity without concrete answers or solutions. The Kimberley Prospector will provide updates as more information becomes available.
