Municipality Announces Updates on Water Recovery Programme in Kimberley

Michael Hawthorne

KIMBERLEY – The Sol Plaatje Municipality has issued a media statement to keep residents informed about the ongoing Water Recovery Programme in Kimberley. The program, initiated on Thursday, 28 December 2023, is set to continue until further notice.

In response to the community’s call for water use efficiency, the municipality has seen a reduction in water demand. This positive development, combined with current cool weather conditions, has alleviated some pressure on the water supply, despite limited improvement in water production at Riverton.

As of 28 December 2023, scheduled afternoon water interruptions will be temporarily suspended. However, nightly water interruptions from 20:00 to 05:00 will persist as part of the strategy to boost water levels at Newton Reservoirs.

The Newton Reservoirs’ water levels as of the aforementioned date are as follows:

  1. Tank 102:
    • Capacity: 102 Mega litres
    • Desired levels: 17 feet
    • Current average levels: 9.9 feet
    • Comment: Operational
    • Note: This reservoir will be isolated for cleaning from 04 to 07 January 2024, resulting in water supply from other reservoirs during this period.
  2. Tank R91:
    • Capacity: 91 Mega litres
    • Desired levels: 17 feet
    • Current average levels: 16 feet
    • Comment: Operational (Isolated)
  3. Tank R45:
    • Capacity: 45 Mega litres
    • Desired levels: 14.0 feet
    • Current average levels: 14.10 feet
    • Comment: Operational (Isolated)
  4. Tank R23:
    • Capacity: 23 Mega litres
    • Desired levels: 16 feet
    • Current average levels: 14.10 feet
    • Comment: Isolated (Closed)

To address the situation, the municipality will implement an intervention operational program alongside nightly water interruptions. The upcoming operations on 29 December 2023 include isolating R23 and R45 at 16:00, maintaining R91 and R102 as operational, and initiating draining of R102 to about 7.0 feet for cleaning.

On 30 December 2023, R91 will be filled up to 14.0 feet and put into operation along with R23 and R45. R102 will remain closed until cleaning is completed, estimated to take 3-4 days. The cleaning operation is planned for next week 4 to 7 January 2024,

The community is urged to adopt water-conserving habits during this period, and the municipality expresses gratitude for residents’ patience and understanding. For further inquiries, residents can contact Mr. David Leeuw, Acting CE: Water and Sanitation.

The Sol Plaatje Municipality claims committed to ensuring water storage, quality, and security at the Newton Reservoirs while working collaboratively with the community to manage water resources efficiently.
