Kenilworth Road Reopens Amidst Ongoing Flood Mitigation Efforts

Editorial Staff

KIMBERLEY – After nearly a decade of intermittent closure, the notorious flood-prone section of Kenilworth Road has reopened to traffic. The Sol Plaatje Municipality (SPM) has made headway in addressing the flooding issues, with cleaning and draining operations completed in January 2024.

In response to a media inquiry, the Sol Plaatje Municipality highlighted the ongoing work: “The cleaning and draining of the stormwater channel completed towards the end of January 2024. This has led to significant progress in containing the flooding. The activities to unfold in the next two weeks include the following; construction of sidewalks for pedestrians and stormwater intake, and rehabilitation of damaged sections through laying of interlocking paving bricks.”

Heavy rains predicted for the week bring uncertainty, potentially threatening the progress made on the road’s rehabilitation.

In contrast to the reopening, a surge in illegal dumping along the Kenilworth Road area is posing a new challenge for the area.
