Water Shutdown Today: Sol Plaatje Municipality Faces Backlash for Late Notice

Editorial Staff

In a move that has left residents frustrated and inconvenienced, the Sol Plaatje Municipality has come under fire for the late communication of a water shutdown scheduled for Saturday, 11 November 2023. The municipality issued a notice to all residents, informing them about emergency work that would be carried out at the Riverton Water Treatment Plant, resulting in a water interruption in certain areas.

The emergency work, involving the cleaning of clarifiers, is set to commence at 17:00 and continue until the early hours of the next morning, 04:00. While the municipality assured residents that efforts were being made to reduce the impact on water supply, it is expected that some areas receiving water from the Newton Reservoir may experience low pressure or no water during the determined hours.

The municipality has stated that its primary objective is to minimize disruptions by addressing leaks on the main bulk pipelines without implementing a full water supply shutdown. They have also urged residents to conserve water by refraining from watering their gardens and reserving water for consumption only. This, they claim, will enable the reservoirs to maintain satisfactory levels and provide sufficient pressure to supply all areas in Kimberley.

However, the short notice given to residents has sparked outrage, with many expressing their disappointment in the municipality’s communication methods. Concerns have been raised regarding the inconvenience caused by the shutdown, as well as the potential impact on businesses and households, especially those with limited access to alternative water sources.

Residents argue that the municipality should have provided more timely and detailed information, allowing them to make necessary arrangements to cope with the water interruption. The late notice has left many scrambling for contingency plans and questioning the municipality’s ability to effectively handle such situations.

Furthermore, the lack of transparency regarding the reasons for the emergency work has raised suspicions among some residents. The municipality’s failure to address the cause of the clarifier cleaning and the delay in communication has fueled speculation and distrust.

Despite these criticisms, the Sol Plaatje Municipality has called for the understanding and patience of residents, emphasizing their commitment to resolving the situation as efficiently as possible. However, this incident has highlighted the urgent need for improved communication and crisis management protocols within the municipality.

As residents brace themselves for the upcoming water interruption, questions remain about whether the municipality will learn from this experience and take the necessary steps to prevent similar communication failures in the future.
