Kimberley Power Station: A Beacon of Light Through Time

Michael Hawthorne

The Kimberley Central Power Station, the operational core of Kimberley, is a silent witness to the evolution of Kimberley from a diamond mining boomtown to a hub of industrial development. Established in 1903 by De Beers Consolidated Mines, the power station became a powerhouse of not only electricity but also an integral part of Kimberley’s rich history.

Birth of a Powerhouse (1903-1904)

Commissioned by De Beers Consolidated Mines, the construction of Kimberley Central Power Station marked a significant milestone in the region’s energy infrastructure. Operational since 1904, the station initially powered De Beers’ mining operations and fueled the burgeoning city of Kimberley.

Decades of Reliable Power (1904-1950)

For almost 50 years, Kimberley Central stood as the sole source of electricity for the region, playing a pivotal role in Kimberley’s industrial development. Remarkably reliable, the station held a world record between 1902 and 1935 for being shut down for only 90 minutes due to breakdowns.

Changing Currents (1950s-1980s)

In 1950, ownership of the station transitioned to Eskom, the national electricity utility. Eskom integrated Kimberley Central into its national grid, connecting the Northern Cape to a broader power network. However, by the late 1980s, advancements in technology and the station’s inability to meet growing energy demands led to its decommissioning.

Fading into History (Late 1990s/Early 2000s)

The late 1990s and early 2000s witnessed the gradual disappearance of Kimberley Central Power Station. Largely demolished, only remnants such as fragments of the foundation and possibly some smaller structures may remain scattered at 3 Diamond Street, Kimberley, South Africa.

Legacy Lives On

Although no longer standing, the legacy of Kimberley Power Station endures in the city’s history and its impact on South Africa’s energy landscape. The story of this once-mighty station serves as a poignant reminder of the critical role electricity plays in development and the constant need to adapt to changing energy demands.

As Kimberley moves forward, the echoes of its industrial past continue to reverberate, with the Kimberley Central Power Station leaving an indelible mark on the city’s skyline and the nation’s energy narrative.
